Alexandra David-Néel is maybe the coolest lady explorer ever. As well as exploring the East extensively at a time when ladies were not encouraged to travel on their own, she was a spiritualist, Buddhist and writer. Born in 1868 in Paris, by the time she was 18 she’d travelled extensively around Europe and was a member of the Theosophical Society. She wrote her first book when she was 30, and when she was in her forties she travelled to India to study Buddhism, met a prince, and possibly had an affair with him. During her extensive travels in Asia, she lived in a cave, adopted a monk (yes, adopted) and travelled to Tibet at a time when it was closed to foreigners. In Tibet she met and hung out with the 13th Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama, which no European lady had ever done before. She kept travelling with her adopted monk companion until she was 78. She kept writing about her travels and spirituality until she died AT THE AGE OF 101. Also, she opted for a double-barrelled surname when she married, instead of ditching her name in favour of her husband’s. An amazing woman.

Fantastic woman!

True lady pioneer. I can’t believe she was born 100 years before me and was alive when I was born.

Saute Mouton - The Lamb Jump by *thrumyeye

I really miss my blog. My son says he’ll have it back up next week… but I miss thinking every day what I will chat about tonight, even if I don’t actually DO it.

These pictures were taken on a recent trip I made to downtown San Antonio. This is more significant than you might think, in that even though I live here and have never lived very far from here, I have not driven downtown but once in my life, when I scared the living shit out of myself by driving the wrong way on a 1-way street. But now, something like 20 years later, with new courage and a GPS on my phone, I made the trip and took myself to this antique store I discovered a few years ago. That time, my kids and I had ridden the bus downtown and walked around all day before catching the bus back to our side of town. That was an adventure, too. But one does not really peruse a 3-story antique store with 3 little kids in tow. So this time, I took just me, and I took my time. I can’t wait to go again!

I have a real passion for old stuff, stuff that has lived a life before I came along and gave it a new purpose. I don’t actually fantasize about its past life, I just enjoy the fact that its story continues. So when I bought the little white porcelained pot I knew it would be perfect for all my beautiful markers and pens. It wasn’t until I got home and showed it to Paul that I discovered what its past life consisted of…  so although there’s absolutely nothing about its past that I find interesting or charming, its future is certainly brighter than its past. AFTER it got scrubbed with soap and scalding hot water! Twice!

I love this article. When I was a little girl I would ask my mom, “What’s wrong?” and she would say, “Nothing honey. I’m just thinking.” So eventually I’d just go, “That must be her thinking face.” Now my kids would ask me the same thing, but my daughter started going, “Mom, cheer up! Be happy!” and I would say, “Dammit, this IS my happy face!”
